Don’t hate, rollerskate!

Houston has had some incredible weather these past few weekends! Highs in the 70s, sunny and simply beautiful. So my rollerskating buddies and I took advantage of it with a street skate and…my first ever trip to a skate park!

Spoiler alert: I didn’t actually die. Whew.

imageHow cute are Melissa’s Moxi skates? I’m so jealous. I’m still rocking my ancient Riedell 265s, but they’ve served me so well for six years and counting.

Just a perfect little day of skating in the sun and stopping for tasty beers.

But this past Sunday our objective was a lot less leisurely: skate park! It was time to make good on my New Year’s goal to try aggressive skating. I was full-on nervous that morning…rapid heartbeats, sweaty palms, the whole bit.

Ok so I realize that what we were doing looks fairly tame, ha. But as a former roller derby skater who is so used to a totally FLAT track, going up that little baby ramp was SO scary at first! I’m just glad that I’ve street skated as much as I have because it helped my learning curve tremendously.

Then we headed to a shallow bowl at the back of the park to work on “pumping” which is the movement you need to learn to eventually skate on a half pipe. It was in here that I really started to relax and enjoy myself, probably because we finally weren’t surrounded by skater bois, haha.

We finished up with Melissa showing us her sweet jumping skills. She’s been to the park a couple times and is waaaaay ahead of me. Hope I can catch up!

Yep, I’m hooked! Here’s to spending many more weekends at the skate park with some badass women, dodging skateboarder dudes and gathering mini victories.
