Live music in Houston: Summer and Fall 2017

With Free Press Summerfest right around the corner and a lot of other great shows coming up on the calendar, it’s time for a live music update.

Read on to see who I’ve seen lately, plus all the great bands that are coming to town soon!

The best show I’ve seen lately was Shonen Knife at Walter’s last week. This band is so great! I saw them for my first time in 2014 and just fell fast in love. The AC was out at Walter’s for this show so we were all dying, but Shonen Knife just smiled all through their set and talked about how stoked they were to be back in Houston. Such pros.

Fred has been able to come out to a few shows with me lately, which is a rare treat. Not only did he get to see Shonen Knife, but we caught The Sword earlier this month and then The Black Angels last week. The Sword’s new stuff is sounding really great to me, it feels like they’re mixing more Black Sabbath/classic metal into their sound these days and I’m digging it. And The Black Angels always have my heart.

I love this view from the roof of White Oak Music Hall, it’s so nice to go up there and get a breath of fresh air and look at the skyline.

I also went out with my band mates (that’s my band’s bass player, Tim, next to me) to see Sex Ray Vision, Tim’s nephew’s band. What a great band name, right? They were all really young kids, playing punk hardcore scream type stuff, so it was an…interesting experience. It felt really nice to support young musicians on a tour.

As always, I may not go to all the shows I currently have on my calendar, but here are the ones I’m the most interested in:

  • Girlpool, June 16 at Walter’s
  • Alice Bag and Fea, June 17 at Walter’s
  • Deep Cuts and Roky Moon and Bolt, June 29 at White Oak Music Hall
  • Delta Rae, July 18 at White Oak Music Hall
  • Waxahatchee, August 6 at White Oak Music Hall
  • Boyfriend, August 17 at White Oak Music Hall
  • Alice Cooper, August 19 at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
  • Future Islands, September 12 at White Oak Music Hall
  • Descendents, September 22 at House of Blues
  • Cigarettes After Sex, September 22 at White Oak Music Hall
  • Depeche Mode, September 24 at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
  • The Flaming Lips, September 29 at Revention Center
  • Father John Misty, October 1 at White Oak Music Hall
