There are so many reasons why I joined 100,000 people to March on Austin this past Saturday — if pressed to list them all I might end up with as many reasons as there were marchers.

Certainly I marched for all of the reasons outlined in the march’s mission statement. And I picked Austin over DC or Houston because right now I have a few bones to pick with the Texas Legislature, specifically. But instead of why I marched let’s talk about for whom I marched.

I love taking weekend road trips to Austin. With all the new stuff popping up on a daily basis on the East side, there’s always something new to see and do, plus all our favorite Austin haunts as well.

So when we saw that Eagles of Death Metal had both a Houston and an Austin date on their tour, we opted for Austin and booked an Airbnb so we could make a fun roadtrip out of it. We also decided to finally try out this Franklin Barbecue place that everyone’s always talking about…

Fred and I got married eight years ago. I’ll spare you the “I married my best friend” and “I remember it like it was yesterday” business and just level with you: I’m lucky as hell.

Every time our relationship comes up in conversation lately I end up fully admitting that we lucked out. I somehow knew he was the only one for me very early on in our relationship (as in, less than two months into it), at the stupid-young age of 23. By all accounts this should have failed miserably, right? We should have grown up some more and changed fundamentally somehow and then we should have grown apart.

But that didn’t happen. And it shows no sign of happening.
