Remember my Riot Grrrl Post-Election Toolkit post where I mentioned thinking about what causes matter the most to you and seeing how you can help them? In that post I also suggested you think about whether a group or club you’re already in has the potential to be organized for a good cause.

I’m so happy to say that a group of friends and I actually pulled that off. Our regular art/craft/DIY exchange meetups have officially been organized into an activist cause: the Makers and Thinkers Collective of Houston. We threw our first event this month and made more than $400 for local nonprofits!

Here’s an easy Halloween DIY for those who are a bit more gothic than goth. Give me the dried roses on the gravestone, the locket bearing the portrait of a dead lover, the dropped handkerchief wet with tears! Give me silhouette art.

I love how silhouettes highlight all the small details, like the tiniest eyelashes and hair curls, and how it hearkens back to the Victorian era. It’s perfect for Halloween decor — so romantic and yet so mysterious and ghostly. And most importantly, since I’m all about the easy DIYs, they’re doable with tools you probably already have, and you’ll be finished in about 20 minutes!

After I made my Frida Kahlo-inspired flower crown for the fiesta we attended in Mexico, I had some smaller peonies and an extra headband leftover so I decided to make a smaller crown that is bright, pretty and definitely festival-ready. The method I came up with to make these is incredibly simple and you only need three items plus a wire cutter, so…why not?

In the January edition of Lovely Things I talked about weaving artist Jeannie Helzer and her amazingly fluffy wall hanging concoctions. Her work made me feel so inspired to create a hanging of my own.

I decided to start with something super simple and easy, since I’m a beginner at this (and my loom is still on its way here). I bought some fat merino wool yarn and created this super simple large wall hanging, as well as a smaller ombre-dyed version. No loom or weaving experience required.  Read on for how to DIY!

I’m a happy convert to the whole ring stacks craze going on right now. Scores of dainy-thin bands on multiple fingers is a look that’s simultaneously so feminine and mysterious — I think it brings to mind gypsy fortune tellers with all their beautiful and ornate rings.

Well, with great ring collections comes great responsibility: you need somewhere to put them. No wonder you see adorable little ring dishes and bowls popping up at all the stores these days. But why not make your own? And what a perfect last-minute Christmas gift project, right? Read on for instructions!

So I know that as I type this post it’s 80 degrees out in Houston AND it’s super humid. But I have it on good authority that we’re getting our first true cold front today! Bring on the thick socks and cozy times.

What better time than this week to pick up the ingredients for a nice hot cup of Swedish mulled wine, or glögg. It’s the kind of drink that both wine enthusiasts and boozy-cocktail lovers can delight in. Read on for instructions!
