On New Year’s Eve, Sally and I went to the Troika, where we met Fritz. The couples were dancing with hands on each other’s hips, yelling in each other’s faces, streaming with sweat. An orchestra in Bavarian costume whooped and drank and perspired beer. The place stank like a zoo.

After this, I think I strayed off alone and wandered for hours and hours through a jungle of paper streamers. Next morning, when I woke, the bed was full of them.

Here’s an easy Halloween DIY for those who are a bit more gothic than goth. Give me the dried roses on the gravestone, the locket bearing the portrait of a dead lover, the dropped handkerchief wet with tears! Give me silhouette art.

It’s perfect for Halloween decor — so romantic and yet so mysterious and ghostly. And most importantly, since I’m all about the easy DIYs, they’re doable with tools you probably already have, and you’ll be finished in about 20 minutes!

Growing up, what Thanksgiving meant to me was a fancy dinner at our dining table, which otherwise didn’t see much use. My sister and I would dress up in pretty dresses and sit like ladies in the high-backed oak dining chairs with white napkins on our laps, sipping sparkling grape juice and pretending it was champagne. Before my dad said grace, we’d go around the table and say one thing we were grateful for.
