Lovely Things

via

This month I’ve been feeling really motivated and creative and I’ve been getting back into enjoying all different kinds of goodness in my life, like making music, exercising and spending time with good friends.

I’m really digging bold, happy graphic design in super bright colors right now. Read on for some of my faves, and maybe you’ll catch my good mood!

Just like how leather and jean jackets are a cool girl’s go-to armor, a back patch on that jacket is the ultimate ride-or-die.

Whether you iron it, sew it, safety-pin it or paint it, there’s only one rule: don’t mince your words.

Pairing blush tones of rose with metallic gold is a total winning combination, guaranteed to get my attention. It makes sense that those two shades are practically BFFs, considering how we all already love rosegold, right?

If I played my cards right, my visit to Amsterdam next month should coincide perfectly with the tulip season there. I can’t wait to see all the rows and rows of bright flowers, buzzing with bees as far as the eye can see, like in this post from designlovefest!

All our Amsterdam planning (plus this late-winter cold snap in Houston) has me eager to put away my sweaters. Let’s daydream about all the lovely things that springtime entails, shall we?

Is anyone out there feeling a little fatigued lately? Tired of paying such close attention to everything, tired of feeling so outraged by every news cycle, maybe even physically tired from marching and holding signs? I hope you take some time to yourself to recharge. As for me, I spent my Sunday night on my couch drinking wine and watching The Love Witch  so I’m feeling ready for fresh motivation.

I’ve been saving a lot of feminist-themed art lately for that reason. I love it in all its zine-ready, in-your-face glory. I also love how it reminds me that there are so many others out there just like me, and that together we can make a difference. Here are some of my faves…

Today is the 20th anniversary of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. When it came out in theaters I was 13 years old, the kind of girl who wore glittery ice blue eyeshadow and long skirts bought at thrift stores, absentmindedly braiding my hair during eighth grade math class.

I’d already read the play, of course. I spent much of my pre-teen years slowly working my way through the Collected Works of Shakespeare while other girls my age played soccer or rode bikes.

I’ll admit I was a bit apprehensive about the flared jeans trend at first — it reminded me too much of the early 2000s hippie-turned-raver look, when you paired a ripped up pair of bell-bottom jeans with your Adidas sneakers, a baby tee and piles of rubber bracelets.

But I’m here today to tell you all that there is indeed a graceful way to embrace the return of wider jean hems.  It’s very 70s but never hippy-dippy and no Adidas in sight.

I went on a street skate this past weekend for the first time in MONTHS (thanks, rainy Houston weather) and now I’m falling back in love with it all over again. I’m already chomping at the bit to plan the next skate!

Late summer is the best time to cruise around on a pair of quads. It’s so hot out, but snow-cones and rollerskates are basically BFFs. If that isn’t enough to get you rolling, here’s some fun skate art to inspire you.

I had to hospitalize my cat over the holiday weekend. He’s back home and doing much better now but my heart still feels like it’s racing from all that panic!

When you have had a pet for a long time, leaving them at a vet clinic and coming home to an empty house feels so unnatural and depressing. I found myself constantly expecting him to wander into the kitchen looking for his food bowl, and every motion I saw out of the corner of my eye seemed like him at first, flicking his tail back and forth.

So naturally I was drawn to cat-themed art while I was missing him so much. I’ve gathered a few of my favorites to share with you guys.
